William Eugene Smith

  • He was considered the originator and developing the photo essay into a sophisticated form.

  • He was fired from Newsweek for refusing to use a medium format camera, thus joining Life magazine in 1939 using a 35mm camera.

  • Was a war correspondent for Flying magazine (1943-1944), and a year later Life. He covered the US island hopping of the pacific front, capturing some of the most emotional and groundbreaking photos from the war in the pacific front.
